The root of this "ever learning but never coming" syndrome is planted in the oldest story of mankind. Yep, from the times of the first man, Adam, that God Almighty created.

And neither was the man alone but with his wife Eve. The temptation in the Garden of Eden was not merely to eat a piece of fruit; it was the enticing prospect of independent knowledge. The knowledge that Satan, the Devil, in the form of a snake marketed to Eve that tree of knowledge of good and evil was a solution to his imagined problem; they thought, "If only we could be like God...."

When the serpent presented the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the promise was simple yet profound:

The temptation was to acquire wisdom outside of God’s prescribed way—to become their own source and arbiter of truth, to bypass divine instruction and possess ultimate understanding directly.

The Devil convinced them to believe that God was no longer needed, all they needed was knowledge instead of the God of Knowledge and Wisdom. This act defined a new human condition: a relentless intellectual hunger divorced from humble submission to the Creator.

Today, this ancient impulse manifests in our exhaustive pursuit of secular knowledge that deliberately excludes God.

We master physics but refuse to acknowledge the First Cause. We explore the universe’s beginning but dismiss the ultimate Creator. We dissect human behavior in psychology but refuse to accept the truth of the fallen soul and the need for redemption.

On and on we go...the learning continues, the libraries grow, the data multiplies. But, unfortunately, the foundational Truth—which is the identity and authority of God—is constantly circumvented.

We can take the whole day talking about the mistake of Adam and Eve but one thing is clear, they ended up taking the fruit of the forbidden tree.

The matter does not end there Apostle paul takes it further. What is the "knowledge of the truth" that Paul references, which these people are unable to reach?

It is important to understand that the Greek word used for "knowledge" here, epignōsis, signifies full, deep, and intimate knowledge, not just gnōsis, which means information or acquaintance.

The "truth" itself, according to the Bible, is not a set of facts or a philosophical concept; Truth is personal. The Lord Jesus stated plainly:

Therefore, the knowledge of the truth is not merely knowing facts about the Bible, but coming into a saving, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

The individual who is "ever learning" but never reaches this essential knowledge is like a sailor who endlessly studies the maps of the world but refuses to set sail toward the only port that offers refuge.

They accumulate data—the gnōsis—but lack the life-altering, epignōsis of Christ.

And that beloved is not what God wants but for us to come to full knowledge of the Truth of His Son, the only true Knowledge and Truth, hallelujah!

Now lets look at why does relentless learning often fail to secure this knowledge of the truth? The Bible identifies several key reasons related to the nature of the human heart and the source of truth:

1. The Corrupt Fountain of the Heart

Paul connects the "ever learning" individuals with those who are "loaded with sins, led away with divers lusts."

It is not their intellectual capacity that hinders them, but their moral and spiritual inclination.

The desire to live independently of God's moral law acts as a powerful barrier. If embracing the truth requires repentance and submission to Christ, then those who love their sins will inevitably avoid that truth, no matter how much they study.

They seek knowledge that justifies their lifestyle, not one that corrects it.

2. Lack of Spiritual Discernment

The truths of God are not found through purely natural reasoning. They are spiritually discerned.

Paul makes this clear:

Without the Spirit of God guiding the inquiry, the deepest and most profound truths of existence—the nature of God, the purpose of life, the plan of salvation—remain hidden beneath an intellectual veil.

The curse of the Tree of Knowledge is that it encourages the mind to run on its own power, apart from the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit.

3. The Substitution of Scripture

For many, the relentless consumption of worldly knowledge replaces the pure source of truth, which is the Word of God.

The Bible is not just a book; it is the source of the knowledge of the truth:

When the countless books, websites, and podcasts of human wisdom are given more time and credence than the eternal, unchanging Scriptures, the pursuit is doomed to failure. A person may learn everything about the shadow but remain ignorant of the substance.

We stand today at a crucial crossroads, constantly tempted by the intoxicating fruit of the cursed Tree of Knowledge—the endless stream of information promising ultimate understanding without God. We see the clear, historical result: a society that has accumulated more data than ever before, yet struggles with unprecedented levels of anxiety, confusion, and moral relativism.

The relentless pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, apart from divine revelation, is a tragic, self-imposed trap. It leaves one "ever learning" but never truly knowing, perpetually wandering in an intellectual desert.

The cure for this spiritual famine is not less learning, but rather redirected learning. We must move away from the cursed tree of independent knowledge and turn back toward the Tree of Life, whose true representation in the New Testament is Jesus Christ. True wisdom does not come through the volume of material we consume, but through the humble posture of heart before God and the focused study of His Word.

The path out of the perpetual cycle is simple, yet revolutionary: we must ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the Scriptures, seeking not merely information, but the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Let us cease striving to be "as gods, knowing good and evil" on our own terms, and instead, submit to the King of Kings, who alone is the Truth. Only then will the relentless, fruitless learning cease, replaced by the profound, satisfying, and eternal knowledge of Him in whom are "hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

This is the only knowledge that truly sets one free. And it will remain like that until the coming of the Lord, because He is indeed coming for the truth seekers, be ready!
